Miss West Africa International was won by Ivanlida Reis from Cape Verde, Miss West Africa Cape Verde 2011. 1st Runners up Yassin Jagne from Gambia, 2nd Runners up Stella Bangura from Sierra Leone. By far the biggest event in Gambia to date. More info and pictures soon to come.
There is only a week to go before Queens from all over the World join up together in The Gambia for the most anticipated pageant this year, Miss West Africa International 2011. The culmination of a year of Miss West Africa pageants that took place from USA, Ghana, Italy, Cameroon, and many other countries across West Africa and the Diaspora. MY TRIP TO CV-by Marques Houtman
I had a chance to spend a day with a professional model and newly crowned Miss West Africa Cape Verde: Ivanilda “Vanny” Reis and I found it very demanding. In order to maintain the top magazine (KRIOULA) and agency (VAISS MODELS INC) in Cape Verde you have better covet some navy seal-like characteristics. A tough work schedule leaves little time to complain when you are trying to reach the top in a demanding international industry while living in a virtually untouched regional market.
Cabo Verde
Cape Verde, the rising star of Africa, is well indeed on the rise. Bahama-like Beach front resorts, Miami style nightclubs, and most of all friendly people. Since the first time I traveled to CV in 99 a lot of progress had been done and a lot still has to be changed. Rolling daily blackouts, water shortages (on an island? Wtf?) and a sense of laziness that leads to incompetence (TACV Nightmare Story). However, bright youth taking advantage of education, ignoring the victim mentality that is shaking the world and are coming back and helping the different parts of the country. I had a chance to go to Mindelo, Soa Vicente and Praia, Santiago on this trip and meet someone that is doing just that.
Mindelo, was its usual smooth and relaxing place. I met with the complete Miss West Africa Cape Verde committee and already have huge ideas for MWACV 2012 and I wish I could have done multiple days with the youth in Mindelo. The island has a tropic flavor with breath-taking sunset and some of the best clubs you can go to in the whole country.
UNKNOWN MARKET FOR MODELS
Praia is the capital, where everything is going down. Trade and commerce centers, universities, and everyday industries that keep a country alive. I met Vanny there at a restaurant where she instructed we were going to wait for a photographer. As you walk through Palmareju (Praia’s up and coming new district west of the beach: Cabrikanala) and take a few twists and turns you come up on a nice 2nd floor studio that holds the whole hardworking team that keeps everything together. “If we had lights, I would show how everything works,” Miss Reis, 25, chuckled about her agency, Vaiss Models Management. Praia, along with many other regions of the island country, were experienced daily blackouts leaving parts without electricity for upwards of 18hours out of the day. ”I’m ready for the next level, I work hard out here, have my business and accolades; now its time to expand, Miss West Africa Cape Verde is a great opportunity for me!” Going to school in Brazil and earning her Masters Degree in Physical Education, Ms. Reis understands that she can promote her country, agency and herself. Stay tuned as she makes her move internationally.
Bo Trabaj tcheu? (You Work Much?)
Vanny is not a typical pageant queen / model, she received her undergraduate degree in physical education from Universidade Estadual Da Paraiba, Campina Grande-Brasil, her graduate degree from Universidade Integradas de Patos, Campina Grande- Paraiba , Brazil. She has played forward for CV Sr Basketball National team in Lisbon (2009) and managed 35 plus shows in Europe, S. America, and Africa. 2 years ago she teamed up to start Vaiss Models Inc (Praia) and that is a good resume because she is going to need it where she is heading: Miss West Africa International. MWA is a unique competition with contestants from all over the world. Please show her support.
Miss West Africa Cape Verde’s Ivalnilda “Vanny” Reis’s Daily Routine:
My routine: I like to wake up early and go to office work, I prefer to take my coffee at home and usually like fruits and grains with natural yoghurt.
I like to train at lunchtime so before going to the gym I take protein shake. One and a half hour of training consisting of cardio and weight training, and I go back home for lunch. I very often eat such as things as vegetables and fish, beans or salad. In the afternoon I like to eat fruits or fruit juices before going to pilates classes in the gym. For dinner I like soups and salads. I like natural foods, because they’re healthier, but occasionally like to eat pizza and pasta, and chocolate.

A bela dançarina e modelo Claudia Moreira nos representou cabo-verdianos nas finais do Miss África Ocidental Reino Unido, infelizmente, ela não pegar a coroa. Embora, ela foi a primeira vez Cabo Verde para entrar no competiton. Ela foi também uma das favoritas de muitas pessoas para ganhar, e em um país Inglês falando ela definitivamente abriu as mentes das pessoas sobre Cabo Verde. Estamos muito orgulhosos dela e nós desejamos a ela muito sucesso em todos os seus empreendimentos.
